Malayalam Cinema Finally Getting Its Due Recognition

Based in the state of Kerala, Mollywood is the film industry that produces movies in the Malayalam language. Renowned for its strong storytelling, realistic characters, and content-driven cinema, the industry has consistently delivered quality films despite operating on relatively modest budgets. For decades, Malayalam filmmakers have been at the forefront of crafting compelling narratives that prioritize substance over spectacle.

However, owing to its comparatively smaller commercial footprint when measured against Telugu and Tamil cinema, Mollywood has often struggled to receive the national recognition it deserves. That perception has gradually begun to change in recent years, thanks to the success of films such as Premalu, Aadujeevitham, and L2: Empuraan. These productions have not only performed well commercially but have also expanded the reach of Malayalam cinema across South India and beyond.

A testament to the industry’s growing stature is the recognition being accorded to its biggest icons. Mohanlal and Mammootty, two of the most celebrated actors in Indian cinema, have been honored by the Central Government for their immense contributions to the field. While Mohanlal was conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Mammootty was recently awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honor.

Interestingly, Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma was also among the notable recipients of the Padma Bhushan. Having led India to victories in the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, Rohit shares this distinguished honor with Mammootty, further highlighting the significance of the recognition bestowed upon the Malayalam cinema legend.
